Susan Mary Fox

Susan Mary Fox died peacefully after a long illness on Nov. 30, 2021, at the Mount Airy, Md., home of her two younger sisters.
Born in Baltimore in 1936, she was educated in Maryland public schools and Bryn Mawr College. She pursued a lifelong love of learning, initially of Greek and Latin classics but later embracing a broad range of literature, particularly 20th century poetry.
She taught in independent schools and Mount Holyoke College before moving to Darlington. There, her love of animals fostered years of assistance to animal welfare activities.
Also in Darlington, she enjoyed being a participant in the faith community of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. In 2014 she returned to Maryland.
She is survived by three sisters: Ann Fox Miller, Clare Fox Archer and Ruth A. Fox; her nephew and niece, Stephen Fox and Caitlynne Fox; and many cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Harry M. Fox and her longtime friend and colleague, Alice Dargan Jones. A private graveside service was held at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, Md. Those wishing to give a memorial offering may consider the Darlington County Humane Society or St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.
