While most students in Darlington County were on spring break this past week the baseball players for the Lamar Silver Foxes were participating in the prestigious Southeastern Baseball Classic, which is hosted each year by the Hartsville Red Foxes at Jimmy White Park.
Lamar opened the tournament against the Red Foxes this past Tuesday, April 18, and defeated Hartsville 10-4 on the opening night making a statement that that these Silver Foxes were not going to leave empty handed.
“It was a good one,” Lamar head coach Adam Windham said. “We played pretty well. It was a big win for us. Our kids were really looking forward to that opportunity and they made the most of it.”
The Silver Foxes dropped their next two games, a 12-2 lost to Laurel Highlands out of Pennsylvania on Wednesday and a 13-3 lost to Paul IV out of Virginia on Thursday.
In its fourth and final game of the tournament on Friday night, Lamar dominated the West Florence Knights, winning 6-1.
Lamar was the best performing area team in the tournament as West Florence and Hartsville both went 1-3 while the Silver Foxes were 2-2.
“Overall, we were happy,” Windham said. “Beat two really good teams and got beat by two really good teams. Feel like it was a great way to lead into the playoffs.”
