Hartsville falls to West Florence 33-28

The Hartsville Red Foxes came up short, 33-28, on Friday in Florence against the West Florence Knights. The Red Foxes’ Sam Spence connected for a 39-yard field goal with 6:03 remaining in the first quarter to take the first lead of the game. With 10:41 remaining in the second quarter, Hartsville’s J’Shawn Anderson hit pay dirt on an 8-yard run. Chase Elsessler’s PAT was good and Hartsville was up by 10 points. However, this was to be short-lived as West Florence’s Terry McKithen rushed 15 yards for the 6-point touchdown. The PAT failed but the lead was cut to 4 points. The Knights connected on Nyke Johnson’s 74-yard touchdown run with 6:24 remaining in the first half. The Knights converted the 2-point play on McKithen’s run. Hartsville was not done yet with the scoring in the first half as D.P. Pendergrass returned a kick for a 98-yard score with 5:50 remaining in the second quarter. Elsessler’s PAT was good. Hartsville’s Anderson scored on a 13-yard rush, and Elsessler connected for the PAT with 1:20 remaining in the first half. With only 11.4 seconds remaining in the period, West Florence’s George Derrick threw 30-yard pass to Dylan Snyder. Sam Spence’s PAT was good. With 3:14 remaining in the third quarter, Spence hit a 29-yard field goal for the Knights. Pendergrass was on the receiving end of a 20-yard pass play from Owen Taylor for the Red Foxes. Elsessler’s PAT was good. West Florence took the lead with 6:15 remaining in the game on a 5-yard pass from George Derrick Floyd to Snyder. The 2-point run failed. The Red Foxes did not give up and drove to West Florence’s 21-yard line only to be stopped on 3 unsuccessful pass plays. Hartsville’s Taylor completed 6 of 11 passes for 78 yards and threw one interception while West Florence’s George Derrick Floyd completed 11 of 15 passes for 142 yards. Hartsville’s Pendergrass caught 4 passes for 38 yards, and Anderson had 40 yards on 2 passes. West Florence’s McKithen had 83 yards on 4 passes while Snyder caught 4 passes for 46 yards. Steven Smalls had 3 receptions for 13 yards. Hartsville’s Pendergrass carried for 65 yards on 9 rushes while Darian McMillan carried 6 times for 37 yards. Anderson picked up 35 yards on 8 carries, and Taylor had 49 yards on 10 carries. West Florence’s McKithen carried the pigskin 19 times for 146 yards while Floyd picked up 70 yards on 18 carries. Johnson had 87 yards on 3 carries, and Smalls garnered 4 yards on a carry. Hartsville will travel Friday, Oct. 9, to face Fort Mill.
