Former USC football players huddle up for literacy during visits to Carolina Elementary, Pate Elementary
Literacy and athletics crossed paths recently as former University of South Carolina football players Langston Moore and Preston Thorne visited students at two Darlington County School District schools. Moore and Thorne promoted hard work and literacy at Carolina Elementary and Pate Elementary schools with their book, “#JustAChicken.”
Students enjoyed fun and engaging visits with the two athletes-turned-authors, who also visited the district’s Summer Reading Program earlier this year.
Moore and Thorne’s book is an exciting children’s adventure that promotes self-confidence through colorful illustrations of football mascots.
Carolina Elementary also held their annual “Parent Picnic” that day, and parents were invited into the school to have lunch with their child.
Pate Elementary used the visit to provide an extra opportunity for second graders. Those students were accompanied by Moore and Thorne to the school’s “4C’s Room.” The room celebrates the important life skills of creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking. In the 4C’s Room, Moore and Thorne spoke to the students about the importance of focusing on academics over athletics.
