Dec. 4 at the Grand Old Post Office, the Darlington Fire Department held its annual meeting to recognize its members and review the year. American Legion Post 13 Post Commander Lane McRae presented the Firefighter of the Year Award to Engineer Brandon Wilson. The department responded to a total of 633 calls, 81 full alarms and 552 station calls ranging from smoke alarms and medical assistance calls to brush and structure fires. The department also recognized the firefighters responding to the most full alarms. First Place: Engineer Jim Brunson Second Place: Engineer Steve Abbott Third Place: Assistant Fire Chief Charles Bailey Fourth Place: Capt. James Jett Fifth Place: Firefighter Clint Deas The Volunteer of the Year is honored with the Beckham-Drake-Stone Award, named for past fire chiefs. This year’s winner, Engineer Steve Abbott, took the honor for the second time in the past five years (2016 and 2021). The Chief’s Pet Award went to Firefighter Seth Cavanaugh (not pictured). Agitator of the Year Award went to Firefighter Ronald Reese Page.
