On Wednesday, Feb. 10, the Darlington girls’ varsity basketball team led by the new coach, Brad Knox, headed to Hartsville to play the Red Foxes led by Coach Justin Johnson for the final playoffs before the state finals. Darlington controlled the tipoff and played an aggressive game. in this hard-fought game, there were several fouls called on both teams. After a 7-point lead from the Falcons, Hartsville Red Foxes quickly drove down court on the Falcons. By the end of the first quarter, the Falcons led 14 to 13. By half time, Hartsville reached 17 points, but Darlington had 26 points. At the start of the second half, Hartsville began an offensive attack against the Falcons and scored consistently. Later into the third quarter the Falcons prevented the Red Foxes from scoring and led 36 – 28 for the end of the quarter. Over the course of the final quarter, Darlington solidified its lead over Hartsville and finished the game with a 46 to 38 victory. Both teams practiced good sportsmanship. The schools practiced the safety guidelines for COVID-19. Darlington’s Jamera Madison scored 10 points, Trezure Montgomery 3, Shaniya Jackson 15, KaNaya Jones scored 4, Ashanti Johnson scored 3, and Sommer Joseph placed 10 points on the scoreboard. Hartsville players Kindan Dawson scored 9 points, Aletrice Benjamin contributed 5, A’zaria Knoxn made 5 points, JaLeya Liles scored 2 points, Nakia Johnson 2 points, and Ameonta Sutton scored a total of 15 points.
