Darlington County baseball and softball playoff round-up
By Drake Horton, Contributing Writer
This past week was one that Darlington, Hartsville and Lamar High School baseball teams would love to forget.
It was, however, a wonderful week for Darlington, Hartsville and Lamar’s softball teams as all three advanced to play in each respective district championship.
Starting with baseball, both the Falcons and Red Foxes failed to reach the district championship game, being eliminated on Saturday and while Lamar did advance to play in its district championship, it had to do so coming out of the loser’s bracket.
In softball, the Lady Falcons, Lady Silver Foxes and Lady Red Foxes had impressive weeks, winning both games and advancing to the district championship, where all three now have a chance to advance on the lower-state championship and upper-state championship this Wednesday.
Score Recap (Baseball)
Darlington
Darlington lost two out the three games it played in this past week. In their opening contest the Falcons dropped a 2-1 decision to one number ranked Chapin before going on to win 3-0 against Hilton Head.
The Falcons were eliminated on Saturday for second straight year by North Myrtle Beach by a score of 9-2.
Hartsville
The Red Foxes lost twice to Dreher, ending Hartsville’s season this past Saturday.
After losing 9-6 to Dreher on the opening night, the Red Foxes kept their championship hopes alive with a win over Berkeley, but another loss to Dreher, this time 4-1 on Saturday eliminated Hartsville for good.
Lamar
The Silver Foxes are taking the long path in trying to win another district championship this season.
Lamar opened up its playoff run with a dominated 15-0 win over North, but a 2-1 loss to Whitmire on the road sent the Silver Foxes to the loser’s bracket.
The Silver Foxes, responded, however, with a 14-3 win over North and now will have to beat Whitmire twice as it tries to make it back to the upper state championship.
