Johnny R. Boykin

Johnny R. Boykin, age 60 passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2016. Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 4th in the chapel at Belk Funeral Home. The family received friends from 12 – 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Born September 27, 1955 in Darlington, S.C., Johnny was the son of the late Daniel Boykin and Frances Gandy Boykin Coleman. He worked as a fire fighter for Palmetto Rural until his heart attack in 2005.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 35 years, Lillie Boykin; his step-son, Kenny Jackson; his grandchildren, Kaitlyn, DJ, and Emma Jackson; his brother, Ronald (Rosie) Boykin; his sister-in-law, Sharon Boykin; his step-brother, Lynn Coleman of NC; three nephews and one niece.

Preceded in death, in addition to his parents, are his brother, Mitchell Boykin and his step-father, Henry Coleman.

The family would like to thank the City of Darlington Fire Department for their help with Johnny before he had a ramp and also for their help along with Palmetto Rural for the ramp they built.

A special thanks to Nurse Leah Thomas and Ronnie Ashley, HHA for their special care they provided for Mr. Boykin when needed.

Claudia Delores Byrd

Funeral services for Ms. Claudia Delores Byrd, formerly of Darlington, were held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 6, 2016 at Bethel A.M.E. Church in Darlington.

Interment followed in Cooper Cemetery directed by Jordan Funeral Home, Inc.

Ms. Byrd was born in Darlington, SC on May 3, 1951. She was the daughter of the late Willie Mae Byrd and the late Leroy Hodges of Darlington, S.C. She passed away on Monday, July 25, 2016 in Largo, MD.

Ms. Byrd viewing was held at the church before and after the service.

The family received friends at the residence of her aunt and uncle, Lucille and Nathaniel Joe, 1324 Gus Drive, Darlington.

Phyllis Louise Wood

Phyllis Louise Wood, age 94 passed Friday, August 5, 2016. The family will be holding a private memorial service directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Born March 7, 1922 in Taunton, MA, Phyllis was the daughter of the late Reginald Mendell and Elizabeth Thomas Mendell. She was a graduate of New Bedford High School and Cape Cod School of Nursing where she then worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse for many years. She was a member of the former Dartmouth Chapter of the Eastern Star and served as their Worthy Matron. Phyllis also served as a Girl Scout leader, and a member of the church choir for Pilgrim United Church of Christ. She enjoyed reading, word puzzles, and knitting.

Surviving are her daughters, Elizabeth Peterson of New Hampshire and Rosamond (Ronald) Boykin of Darlington; her grandchildren, Andrew (Amanda) Boykin, Stephen Boykin, Adam Boykin, Jonathan (Theresa) Peterson; her great-grandchildren, Shanin Boykin, Ashlee Boykin, Andrew Boykin, Jr., Timothy Peterson, Nicholas Peterson, Amanda Peterson, and several great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Donald Mendell of Fairhaven, MA, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Stephen Wood; and her sister, Eleanor Worsley.

Jerry Watford

Jerry Watford, age 76 passed away in his home Friday, August 5, 2016. Funeral services were held 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 7th in the Lamar chapel at Belk Funeral Home followed by burial in Lamar Cemetery.

Born September 9, 1939, Mr. Watford was the son of the late Luther Watford and Macie Amerson Watford. He owned and operated Watford’s Garage. Jerry loved listening to gospel music, and working on antique cars. He was a member of Call To Life Family Worship Center.

Surviving are his wife, Hazel Watford; his daughter, Sonia Blackmon; his granddaughter, Nacole Elizabeth Blackmon, all of Lamar; his sisters, Margie Truette and Carolyn (Bobby) Gibbs of Lamar; his brother, Richard (Mary) Watford of Bishopville; and three special friends, Jerry Brumley, Andrew Criswell, and Allen Brazington.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Jackie Jones.

The family received friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Saturday, August 6th at Belk Funeral Home in Lamar.
