Teen’s death a homicide; girlfriend faces charge

After weeks of investigation, the May 13 death of a Hartsville teen has been ruled a homicide, and another teen described as his girlfriend has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the case, according to reports. Cassandra Jacqueline Escobar, 19, of Hartsville, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of 18-year-old Caleb James of Hartsville, according to reports. James died after being shot by another person, Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee said. He has ruled the death a homicide. Hardee said the incident took place on White Sand Circle near Hartsville about 10 p.m. Deputies initially were told the shooting was accidental. Initial reports indicated that the victim was 16. The coroner’s office and the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.
