Inmate Disturbance reported at W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center

Darlington County Sheriff Michael August has issued the following statement:
On October 9, 2026, Darlington County Sheriff’s Office responded to the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center in reference to an inmate transfer in which while transferring several inmates from one pod to another, inmates refused to be transferred and assaulted several correctional officers. Correctional Officers retreated per protocol and placed the unit on lock down. At which time, deputies responded from the sheriff’s office and patrol.
While responding, several inmates vandalized the pod they were in. Deputies were able to maintain control of the pod and detain all inmates involved. The injured correctional officers are currently being treated for a non-life threatening injury. No inmates were injured during this incident.
Sheriff August remains transparent with the citizens of Darlington County and emphasizes his priority to maintaining safety of employees and inmates while housed in the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center. Sheriff August wants to ensure the public that the facility is under law enforcement control and all inmates are properly secured. There is no threat to the public.
This is an ongoing investigation and charges will follow upon reviewing all evidence.
