Susan Johnson Memorial Scholarship awarded to Mary Lawson

The Susan Johnson Memorial Fund Committee has announced that Mary Adair Lawson has been awarded the 2016 Susan Johnson Memorial Scholarship Grant in the amount of $4,000. This non-payable grant is awarded annually to a graduate or former graduate of Darlington High School (formerly St. John’s High), or a graduate or former graduate from the Darlington Area Attendance Zone of Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology, or Trinity-Byrnes Collegiate School who intends to pursue further education or training leading to a career in health care. Factors considered in the selection of the annual recipient of this award include academic standing, extra-curricular activities, character, and recommendations from the principal and/or faculty of the schools mentioned.

Mary Adair Lawson lives with her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin I. Lawson, and is graduating at this time from Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology in the Class of 2016. Mary is active in the community by participating in Earth Day, Relay for Life of Darlington County, Taste of Mayo Fundraiser, and new school year preparation volunteer. She is a member of the National Honors Society, Beta Club Convention Delegate, received a perfect score on Biology I End of Course exam, and received an Academic Trophy for All A Honor Roll. Mary also served as a Junior Marshal at Mayo High School For Math, Science and Technology for the Class of 2015.
Mary plans to attend Clemson University and major in nursing and has later plans to become a Nurse Practitioner working in the field of dermatology.

She indicates there are several reasons why she wants to enter the health care field; “I have for some time wanted to become a nurse to help people using my personality and training to brighten a patient’s day.” She also indicates, “I have always wanted to learn more about skin care and that is why dermatology interests me so much. Becoming a nurse will allow me to combine my passion for skin care with my love of being around people that I can help.”

The Susan Johnson Memorial Fund was established in 1968 in memory of Miss Susan Johnson, who at the time of her death was an outstanding senior at St. John’s High School and was active in her church and community. Miss Susan Johnson was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Richard (Dot) Johnson.

This fund is administered by a committee operating under the supervision of the Session of the Darlington Presbyterian Church.
