Startup Weekend Hartsville, an immersion into company formation

The 2010 movie Social Network recounts the story of a college-birthed startup company. It’s fraught with dramatic twists: nerds versus athletes, nerds versus a fast-talking shyster, even nerds versus nerds. In less than two hours, an idea born in a dorm room becomes the world-changing, mega billion-dollar success, Facebook.
If only it were that easy. While many of today’s hottest startup companies get their start in colleges and universities by sharp students and faculty researchers, it’s rarely a quick or straight shot to success. Which is why the South Carolina’s Governor’s School of Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is hosting Startup Weekend Hartsville, November 18-20, an event designed to give college students and adults a leg up on startups.
The event is powered by Google and hosted by the South Carolina Governor’s School of Science & Mathematics (GSSM) Foundation’s Innovation Center. According to GSSM faculty member and Startsville Director Kathryn de Ridder-Vignone, Startup Weekend Hartsville comes with its own unique twist: the entire weekend is a deep-dive into company formation focused on innovations in packaging.
