Spring Fling a hit at Darlington Raceway
The sun was bright and so were the colored eggs as dozens of kids scrambled across the Darlington Raceway fields Saturday morning. The kids were taking part in the first Spring Fling, hosted by the track and sponsored by Genesis Healthcare.
Before the egg hunting festivities, a 5K was held with runners of all ages participating.

Raceway President Kerry Tharp was among the early morning runners and was also on hand to watch the kids hunt for their plastic prizes. Tharp said that he was happy to be able to host the event.
“Darlington Raceway is an iconic racetrack in our sport and we are all about community,” Tharp said. “We want the community to feel like this is their racetrack.”
Holding special events outside of the Bojangles Southern 500 opens their doors to a whole new group of people, Tharp said, and might even inspire some new race fans.
“Having events like the one today is important to use because it involves the community and it lets a lot of people in here who have likely never been on our property before,” Tharp said. “We have a wonderful facility here and it shouldn’t just be used four or five times a year.”
The weather was perfect for the event and Tharp was thrilled with the turnout.
“This is a good start for us; starting everything off in the Springtime,” Tharp said. “We had beautiful weather for this. Genesis Healthcare was the main sponsor for this and I think it shows that this community has a lot of pride, not only in Darlington Raceway but in each other. We hope to continue this for a long, long time.”
After the egg hunts, separated into three age groups so that younger children has a shot at the eggs just as much as the older kids, there was a free hotdog lunch and lemonade, a warm weather favorite. Shaved ice rounded out the meal.
Tharp said that he hopes people continue to support the Raceway and all of the events they will be hosting in the coming months.
