In the Darlington County School Board election last week, 2 seats were up for grabs – District 5 and District 7. Dr. Thelma Dawson, representing District 3 was also up for reelection but she was running unopposed. Unfortunately, she passed away just before the election was held so, voters were asked to write-in a candidate. Audrey Gore was declared the winner with 204 votes. Ernest Boston received 73 votes.

Wanda Hassler, representing District 7, was challenged by two contenders – Jacqueline Dubose and Jimmie Epling. Dubose garnered 406 votes (16.8%) and Epling received 662 votes (27.4%). Hassler retained the seat with 1,330 votes (55.1%). Richard Brewer, who represented District 5, had one challenger – Amanda Thompson. Brewer received 633 votes (41%) and Thompson picked up 884 votes (57.25%) to win the seat.

The makeup of the new school board is as follows:

District 1 – Leigh Anne Kelley

District 2 – Lucas Reed

District 3 – Audrey Gore

District 4 – Warren Jeffords

District 5 – Amanda Thompson

District 6 – Charles Govan

District 7 – Wanda Hassler
