The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) held its 23rd annual nationwide Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 9th. Customers were provided with plastic bags and left non-perishable food donations in a bag near their mailbox, before the arrival of their letter carrier. Food collected during Saturday’s drive was delivered to local community food banks and food pantries for distribution during the nation’s largest single day food drive.
Here in Darlington, the shelves at The Lord Cares were nearly bare on Thursday; but what a difference after the letter carriers began bringing in their collections!
Volunteers scurried to sort the donations, and place it in the appropriate places in the food pantry and adjoining shelves in the small building on Grove Avenue.
TLC’s volunteer Sylvia Byrd said she was a bit worried when she drove from her neighborhood to help on Saturday morning, because she did not notice many food bags hanging from mailboxes.
“Oh, but what a surprise to see these full trucks coming in to unload these donations!” she said.
Her daughter had sent her a Mother’s Day card that Byrd shared that had so much meaning to the occasion:
“May all the good you do for others come back to you in ways that make your day as bright as can be,” she said. “And that is so true. The hard work these letter carriers do each year blesses so many, this is by far our largest food drive all year. We thank God for their help, and for all the volunteers that give so much of their time here at The Lord Cares.”
