Darlington County School District (DCSD) announced its 2026-27 District Teacher of the Year and District Support Staff of the Year during a banquet and awards ceremony Tuesday evening inside Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology’s Conference Center.
Michelle Greene, a mathematics teacher at Lamar High School, was named DCSD’s District Teacher of the Year. Michaela Stewart, bookkeeper at Bay Road Elementary School, was named District Support Staff of the Year.
“Great schools are built by great people, and this year’s honorees represent two of our very best,” said Dr. Matthew Ferguson, DCSD superintendent. “What makes this recognition especially meaningful is that they were selected by their colleagues, the people who see their dedication and the difference they make every day. They remind us that every role matters, and that excellence begins with people who care deeply about students and take pride in their work. We are proud to celebrate them and grateful for the example they set across our district.”
Greene said one of the most rewarding parts of teaching is seeing students recognize their own potential and grow in confidence.
“The best part of my job is watching my students grow, not just academically, but as people,” Greene said. “There is nothing better than seeing a student who has struggled finally realize, ‘I can do this!’ I want my students to know that somebody believes in them, even on the days when they don’t believe in themselves. If I can help them see their potential and realize they can do more than they ever thought possible, then I’ve done what I’m supposed to do,” she said. “That’s what keeps me coming back every day.”
As a bookkeeper, Stewart’s role in supporting the daily operations of Bay Road Elementary is critical to ensuring the school has the resources needed to serve students and staff.
“Students are the reason we all come to work each day,” Stewart said. “Whether I am managing school funds, assisting staff, helping parents, or ensuring resources are available for students and teachers, I take pride in knowing that my work supports the overall mission of our school. While my role as a bookkeeper does not place me in the classroom, I understand that every task I complete contributes to creating an environment where students can learn, grow, and succeed. I enjoy being someone others can depend on and finding solutions when challenges arise.”
The evening also celebrated all of the school-level Teachers of the Year and Support Staff of the Year from across the district, recognizing the educators and staff members whose dedication helps students learn, grow and succeed.
