On Saturday, March 6, 2021, Joe’s Grill and the Darlington Downtown Revitalization Association sponsored the 2nd Annual Chili Cook Off Championship at Joe’s Grill, 306 Russell Street, in Darlington. The weather was slightly cool early that morning but, it sooned warmed up for everyone in attendance. Over the course of the morning, approximately 200 spectators came to see the classic cars on display, play games, enjoy the company of friends and taste some wonderful chili. There were 6 chili entries and they seemed quite comfortable with their selections for the contest. The smell of chili with all different seasonings filled the air as people laughed, talked, and enjoyed an outdoor fellowship rarely seen over the past 12 months. The winners of the awards for best chili were: 1st Place — Sheena Kelly and the Flame Team. 2nd Place — Joey Evans for “Pappy’s” chili. 3rd Place — Chris Gainey of Bill’s Grill in Patrick, S.C. Owner’s Choice Award — Ronnie and Carla Anderson for their “A Class” chili. Awards were also given for Classic Cars with 1st Place going to Henry Jackson, 2nd Place to James Lawrence and 3rd Place to Calvin Kelly. It was really nice to see people coming together to have fun once again.
