Inmate escapes in Hartsville, is apprehended
Saturday, May 13, an inmate at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center was transported to Carolina Pines Hospital in Hartsville. The inmate was discharged from the hospital and while in the parking lot escaped from officers at about 10:30 p.m. The inmate attempted to carjack an individual in the parking lot. At that time, one officer fired his weapon; however, no one was injured. The inmate then fled on foot into a wooded area.
Darlington County Sheriff’s deputies and Hartsville Police Department officers tracked the inmate and he was apprehended around 11:40 p.m.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating this incident at the request of the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office. One detention center officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome. This is standard procedure for an officer-involved shooting.
