Hartsville falls to Myrtle Beach 40-35

The Myrtle Beach Seahawks edged the Hartsville Red Foxes 40-35 in Hartsville at Kellytown on Friday, Oct. 16.

This hotly contested battle between the No. 1-ranked 4-0, 3-0 Region 6-4A Seahawks against the 1-3, 0-3 Region 6-4A Red Foxes was a great offensive battle that was proved as the score was knotted at the end of the first quarter at 7 each, 21 each at halftime, and 28 each at the end of the third quarter.

With the score knotted going into the final quarter, Hartsville scored first on a 4-yard run by Cam Ward. The PAT failed.

Hartsville’s Darian McMillan scored on a 3-yard run. Hartsville’s Chase Elsessler’s PAT was good, and Hartsville led by 1 point, 35-34, with 7:33 left in the game.

The Seahawks’ Ben Herriott rushed 7 yards for the final score of the game.

Hartsville had one last chance to change the outcome of the game but was halted on fourth down, one of the few times that the Red Foxes were unable to convert on fourth down during the game. The Red Foxes had already converted three fourth downs in the game.

Hartsville touted three players, J’Shawn Anderson, Owen Taylor and D.P. Pendergrass, who proved to be hard for Myrtle Beach to handle.

Hartsville’s Anderson rushed for 128 yards and 2 touchdowns. Taylor rushed for 115 yards, passed for 185 yards and 2 touchdowns. Pendergrass had 7 catches for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Myrtle Beach’s quarterback Ryan Burger tossed 3 touchdown passes to 3 different receivers in the game.

Hartsville will host South Florence on Friday, Oct. 23.
