George Thomas Standish

DARLINGTON – George Thomas Standish, 69, died at his home on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021. Born Oct. 6, 1952, George was the son of the late George and Pauline “Polly” James Sligh Standish. He was a graduate of St. John’s High School in 1970 where he was a star athlete, excelling in football, baseball, basketball and track, and held many records. George went on to earn a scholarship in football at Western Carolina, and graduated from Francis Marion University. He competed in the Southeastern Arm Wrestling Competition (Russ Jackson as his manager). He was a talented musician and vocalist with an ear for music. George retired from DHEC after 25 years and he was a member of Darlington Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Vicki Stephens Standish; children, Kaley (Charles) Rhodes of Charleston, Jeremy Craig Standish of Jacksonville, Fla., Thomas Dorsey Standish of Darlington; a granddaughter, Polly Dianna Rhodes; sisters, Kendall Standish (Blaz) Pasalic of Darlington, Dianna (Des) Brown of Mobile, Ala., and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Davia Standish Suggs. A funeral service for Mr. Standish was held 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, at Darlington Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private, and the family received friends at the home of Kendall and Blaz Pasalic, 610 Cashua St. in Darlington immediately following the service. Those who wished to pay their respects to George were able to do so on Monday between 1-5 p.m. at Belk Funeral Home.
