FDTC event gives 100+ kids free preventive dental care

Florence-Darlington Technical College Little Smiles free children’s dental care event offered more than 100 children preventive dental treatments during their event on February 21 in honor of National Children’s Oral Health Month.

“The event was a huge success,” FDTC Dental Hygiene and Assisting Program Director Alicia L. Johnston said. “We are so grateful for all of the people who made this such a huge success, including the College’s Early Childhood Development program, College Administration, and all dental faculty, staff, and students.”

The event had 33 dental hygiene and assisting students to provide free dental care including dental assessments, x-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants which equaled nearly $30,000 worth of free care. Additionally, the College’s Early Childhood Development program had 20 students onsite to provide entertainment to the children who were waiting for their appointments.

“It is our hope to teach students to serve their community while they are in school, and then after they graduate,” Johnston said. “This event allows us to instill those values of service into our students, while meeting a need for the children within our local community. It is our honor to serve and host this event each year.”

The FDTC Dental Hygiene Department will be hosting another event like this one later this year, but a date has not been set. However, the FDTC Dental program offers appointments for preventive dental care year-round for both children and adults at a reduced fee. Schedule an appointment with them today by calling (843) 661-8224.
