Kicking off South Carolina’s Sweet Potato Festival weekend, the Darlington Downtown Revitalization Association (DDRA) presents the revival of the Yam Jam on Friday, October 7.
The beach music concert from 6 to 9 p.m. at Palmetto Office Furniture, 308 S. Main St., in downtown Darlington features music by The Recollections Band opening for Jim Quick and the Coastline Band with emcee, Dan E. Lockemy. Sponsors include Dedicated Community Bank, Cumulus Broadcasting, Community Broadcasters, Pepsi of Florence, WBTW News 13, City of Darlington, and iHeart Media.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Limited seating will be available for the disabled and elderly.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at Palmetto Office Furniture, Darlington Library, 204 N. Main St., and City Hall, 400 Pearl St., as well as at the door. Proceeds benefit the DDRA’s revitalization efforts.
The main parking area will be on Planters Drive, thanks to Georgia Pacific, with handicap parking at Palmetto Office Furniture’s rear entry off Dargan Street.
The Yam Jam concert has not been seen since the days of the Jaycees in the early 1990s and earlier.
“We are excited to bring back this tradition and expand the Sweet Potato Festival weekend to increase its impact on our business community,” says Lisa Chalian-Rock, director of the DDRA.
The headliner, Jim Quick, has been touring the Southeast US for more than 15 years, playing nearly 300 shows per year, and has released more than 11 albums including his newest, DOWN SOUTH. Originally introducing their music as the Coastline Band—a band of friends who played the Carolina beach bars day in and day out—the group pushed Quick to the forefront and naturally transformed into Jim Quick & Coastline. Known for his all-out performances and deliberate, off-the-cuff wisecracks, Jim has been a gracious recipient of the Carolina Music Awards “Entertainer Of The Year Award” – nine times.
His devoted fans, the “Coastline Crazies,” know it’s hardly luck that allows Quick’s path to cross with musical greats. It’s his musical gumbo and unadulterated energy that keeps fans coming back for more. And, with the release of DOWN SOUTH and his introduction to country radio, Quick is certain to add more “Crazies” to the mix.
The Recollections Band is a 7 piece band featuring multiple lead vocalists including a dynamic female lead. In addition, the band features a traditional trumpet / saxophone horn section. Specializing in Carolina Beach Music and Rhythm and Blues the band offers a variety of other genres to satisfy and please all age groups and audiences. The band is playing clubs, festivals and private events throughout the southeast.
