Darlington Dragway: SLED shut us down

The Darlington Dragway on East Bobo Newsome Highway in Darlington County says that “restrictions” imposed by the State Law Enforcement Division caused the dragway to cancel last week’s events.
As of Friday, a recorded message on the dragway’s telephone said: “This week’s events have been canceled due to restrictions by SLED.”
Also, the dragway’s Facebook page posted a message: “We are closed tonight. We have been told by SLED if we have spectators tonight, we would be shut down.”
No representatives of the dragway could be contacted Friday. But a SLED spokesman said that the matter involves enforcing provisions of Gov. Henry McMaster’s executive orders concerning COVID-19.
McMaster’s original executive orders on the pandemic have been extended and many provisions remain in effect, although others have been modified or lifted, according to SLED. The original executive orders restricted racetracks, concert venues and spectator sports, and those provisions are still in effect, SLED said.
SLED said a complaint about the Darlington Dragway’s events prompted SLED agents to visit the dragway last week. SLED said the dragway operators agreed to stop operating. No citations were issued, the agency said.
