Julianne Kuykendall Rhodes, a local author, has self-published her third Christian novel titled “A Day on the Nantahala.” “In this novel, Faith and Kane, the two main characters, are Waynesville, North Carolina, natives, but the bulk of the novel takes place on the Nantahala River in Bryson City, which is my very favorite river to raft,” explained Rhodes. The story begins in August 2020 when, after almost a year of grieving the loss of her husband, 40-year-old Faith Chambers runs into her high school boyfriend, Kane Cogburn, who she learns has returned to their hometown of Waynesville after completing his military career and is a widower. When adventurous Kane invites her to spend Labor Day rafting the Nantahala River, typically safe and reserved Faith is hesitant but finally accepts. Just two old friends catching up and enjoying a day outdoors – it would be good for both of them, she decides. However, the day unfolds completely unlike either of them ever expected and, ultimately, they must both make peace with their past after spending a day on the Nantahala. “I often describe my novels as Christian fiction novels with a twist,” said Rhodes. “This one has much biblical truth, action, suspense and adventure all wrapped up into one book.” “There will also likely be some tears shed, so get your tissues handy,” she added. In addition to the gorgeous Nantahala River, other scenes in the novel take place in the North Carolina mountains around Waynesville and Lake Junaluska as well as at the Triple Falls waterfall in Brevard. Another scene takes place at the “Pretty Place” chapel at the YMCA Camp Greenville in Cleveland, S.C. Rhodes is a graduate of Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C., and The Focus on the Family Institute in Colorado Springs, Colo. When she isn’t writing Christian novels, she enjoys church activities, exploring waterfalls, hiking, white water rafting, reading, beach days, road trips and spending time with family and friends. She and her husband, Wayne, split their time between Bethel and Darlington. She is also the author of “The Christmas No One Expected” set in Canton, N.C., and “The Renter Next Door” set in Darlington.
