County Fire District dismisses 30 volunteers

From Staff Reports

The Darlington County Fire District has dismissed 30 volunteers who weren’t living up to expectations in terms of doing their jobs.
County Fire Chief Ricky Flowers told WPDE-TV that officials have tightened their policies for volunteer firefighters; they must respond to 13 calls per year.
“Firefighters are paid per call,” Flowers told WPDE. “So we wanted to compensate the ones who were responding to the way they were supposed to, appropriately.
“We want to be able to have some accountability within our department.
“And say if you’re not going to respond, are you really an asset to us or your community? It was talked about way before this. … They had more than a year to kind of get things squared away. … There has to be a standard.”
