The annual BBQ originated in 1954 as a fund raising event with the proceeds used to advance the ministries of the church. The barbecue is prepared using traditional methods of cooking over 1,700 pounds of boneless pork butt over locally cut hickory for 14 hours. The cooked meat will be hand cut and mixed with 100 gallons of locally prepared mustard based BBQ sauce. The BBQ is served from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The annual BBQ is as much a social event as it is a fund raising event. Preparations begin a week in advance with individuals from near and far volunteering their time to make the event a success. The United Methodist Women’s Annual Bazaar is held concurrently with all proceeds going to missions. The cost for a BBQ plate is $8.00. Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church was founded in 1789 and is the oldest Methodist congregation in Darlington County.
