March Madness was not only for basketball but for reading too at J. L. Cain Elementary. On March 30th, parents, grandparents and students continued their afterschool study of good literature for fun and enjoyment. Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters, an African tale by author John Steptoe, enlightened the group to a deeper awareness of different beliefs and cultures in past times. The group also discussed the interactions and conflicts between families and human behavior.

MotherRead/FatherRead is an activity provided by Darlington County First Steps. Cain Elementary parents attended six weekly meetings in order to learn helpful reading and math strategies using books such as Leo the Late Bloomer and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Mrs. Jerline Lowery facilitated the sessions. The contact person for Cain’s Book Club is Joyce Wingate.
