The Darlington Area Recreation Department held a Back to School Bash the morning of July 30 at the A.W. “Man” Stanley Gym, celebrating the last day of recreation summer league basketball. Scrimmage games were held from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by a hot dog lunch and school supply giveaway for league participants. This year, over 85 children on 13 teams participated in the Rec Department’s summer basketball league.

“It was a big success, and we keep building year over year,” said organizer Don Blakney, adding that more kids playing means more coaches are needed.

Volunteer coach Jackie Johnson, whose Rockets team won their division this year, said he finds the coaching experience fun and rewarding, noting that it helps keep youth busy doing something productive. It also gives kids co-ed athletic experience and provides a confidence boost to girls who might be trying organized sports for the first time.

“They learn the confidence to take their shots, use opportunities when they get them,” said Johnson.
