Sharon Draper, an award-winning author of numerous texts, visited Darlington Middle School recently to lead a “Literacy and Laughter Workshop” for students from three schools.
Draper met with fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders from Darlington Middle School, as well as fifth graders from Brunson-Dargan Elementary and Brockington Elementary Magnet School for Science and Technology. Darlington Middle Teacher of the Year Chenethia Brown, an ELA teacher, coordinated the all-day event.

Principal Eddie Shuler deemed the visit by Draper an educational success.

“It was truly awesome,” Shuler said. “I am extremely proud of the excellent job Chenethia Brown did in orchestrating the educational sessions for our students, as well as students from Brunson-Dargan and Brockington.”

Draper led three sessions throughout the day. The first two focused on the day’s theme, “Literacy and Laughter,” and were split by grade levels. The third session, “One-on-One with Mrs. Draper,” was a personal reading and writing workshop.
