Storm strangled access to Society Hill

The town of Society Hill was not completely cut off by the remnants of Hurricane Florence, but it was close, Mayor Tommy Bradshaw said Tuesday.

When the storm passed through the Pee Dee region over the weekend, most access to Society Hill was cut off, Bradshaw said.

Residents of the town of about 600 people were unable to drive out U.S. 15 to Hartsville or U.S. 52 to Darlington, he said, and Society Hill Road was washed out. But residents still could get to Bennettsville or Cheraw, he said.

The mayor said there appeared to be no flooding of property in the town, but standing water was a problem. Power also went out.
