Smoke is visible for miles as crews fight scrapyard fire

Crews from the Darlington County Fire District, aided by crews from 17 other departments in the area, spent the day and night Friday battling a burning pile of debris at Darlington Shredding Co. off U.S. 52. No injuries were reported, but the blaze produced smoke heavy enough to be seen for miles. Officials said a large pile of scrap metal caught fire during normal operations at the recycling facility about 8 a.m. Friday. Nearby fire departments either aided in fighting the fire or covered for local units that were at the fire scene. Cause of the fire had not immediately been determined. PHOTO BY BOBBY BRYANT
