Sheriff’s Deputy Graduates Criminal Justice Academy

Recently, Darlington County Sheriff’s Deputy James Smith successfully completed the South Carolina Criminal Justice in Columbia. Deputy Smith, a native of Darlington, previously served twelve years in the United States Marine Corps and was sworn in on March 20. During his twelve weeks of training, Deputy Smith served as Class Leader of Class 668.

Deputy Smith is the second uncertified Deputy hired by Sheriff Tony Chavis to complete the Criminal Justice Academy. Deputy Smith is assigned to the Patrol Division under the command of Lt. Mike Hall. He will begin his field training immediately.

Also, Deputy Rachel Chapman completed a two-week training course at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy to become a Class 3 officer. Deputy Chapman has 30 years of law enforcement experience and previously worked for the Magistrate’s Office.
