Rosenwald Alumni Foundation awards $4,000 in scholarships

The Rosenwald Alumni Foundation has awarded $4,000 in scholarships to eight local college-bound students. To be eligible, an applicant must be a descendant of a former Rosenwald student or attended Rosenwald Elementary School in Society Hill. The successful candidate must also reside in Darlington County, is graduating from a high school in the county, and enrolling in the first semester of an accredited college or university. The 2021 recipients are listed with the name of their high school, the institution they will attend, and the name(s) of the former Rosenwald student(s) of whom they are a descendant: — Cameron Graham, Darlington High, University of South Carolina, son of Dionne Graham (Rosewood Elementary), grandson of Matthew Graham (Class of 1963) — Jonah Ham, Darlington HS, Coastal Carolina University, son of Johnnie Mae Ham (Class of 1985), grandson of Helen Jones Ham (class of 1969) — Dana Makayla Joe, Darlington High, North Carolina A&T State University, daughter of Silola Williamson Joe (Rosenwald Elementary), granddaughter of Mamie Ross Williamson (Class of 1963) — Daylon McDonald, Hartsville High, Wingate University, son of Katena Williamson McDonald (Rosenwald Elementary), grandson of Mamie Ross Williamson (Class of 1963) — Kavon Mullins (Rosenwald Elementary), Darlington High, University of South Carolina, son of Paul (Class of 1982) and Lorraine Grant (Rosenwald Elementary) Mullins, grandson of Charles (Class of 1966) and Lila Alston (Class of 1969) Grant — JaDarius Richardson (Rosenwald Elementary), Mayo High School for Science, Math and Technology, University of South Carolina, son of Sharon Singletary (Rosenwald Elementary), grandson of Dora Singletary (Class of 1970) — Ronald Rubin Sparks, Darlington High, Benedict University, son of Michelle Hunter Sparks (Class of 1985), grandson of Lillian Hunter (Class of 1956) — Zekiea Williamson, Darlington High, Claflin University, daughter of Ezekiel Williamson (Rosenwald Elementary), granddaughter of Mamie Ross Williamson (Class of 1963). The Rosenwald Alumni Foundation is a recognized 501(c)3 public charity. Donations are tax deductible as outlined by the Internal Revenue Service. The scholarship fund is an entity of the Rosenwald Alumni Foundation which operates with the expressed mission of “preserving the legacy of Rosenwald Schools in Society Hill through the awarding of scholarships and providing support to the projects of Rosenwald Elementary Middle School.” William K. McCall (Class of 1981) is president of the Foundation; Benjamin Heatley (Rosenwald Elementary), vice president; Emmanuel Williamson (Class of 1968), treasurer; Jenelle K. Davis (Class of 1979), financial secretary; and Jerline M. Lowry (Class of 1963), scholarship administrator.
