Rev. Dr. Ernest Benjamin Burroughs

The Rev. Dr. Ernest Benjamin “E.B.” Burroughs was born on Monday, July 27, 1936, to the late Joseph and Susie Mae Stukes Burroughs, in Sumter, South Carolina. The Lord in His great wisdom called his faithful son home on the day we celebrated the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Friday, December 25, 2020. Being a man of great scholastic aptitude, he pursued and obtained numerous degrees of higher learning. “Dr. E.B.” had a love for education and young people that pushed him to pursue a career in public and Christian education for many years. “Dr. E.B.” knew that the Lord had a call on his life and lived his life worthy of that calling Rev. Dr. Ernest Benjamin “E.B.” Burroughs leaves to cherish his legacy and memory his loving wife, Mrs. Doris Jean Daniels Burroughs of the home; one daughter, Minister Candace B. McLeod (Terrance E.) of Ladson; one son, Mr. Calvin E. Burroughs (Shaquetta Ham) of Florence; 10 grandchildren: Shameek R. Burroughs, Calvin S. Burroughs both of the home, Terrance J. McLeod, Joshua T. McLeod, Arianna F. McLeod, Kaci S. McLeod all of Ladson, Shaquan Burroughs, Shakayla Burroughs, Shakiyah Burroughs, Corey Burroughs and Courtney Burroughs all of Florence; three sisters: Mrs. Pearl B. Clark, Ms. Anna Shirley both of Sumter and Mrs. Pauline B. Montgomery (David H.) of Fort Mill; one brother, Mr. Joe Lee Burroughs of Parsippany, N.J.; a special “daughter,” Mrs. Imogene R. Glover (William) of Florence; a special “niece,” The Rev. Jacqueline B. Blue of Boston, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Dr. E.B. Burroughs lay in-state at Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 552 E. Billy Farrow Highway, Darlington, on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. Due to COVID-19 limitations, the public was required to wear masks, stand at least 6 feet apart, take a temperature check upon entrance and make available their name and a working phone number for contact tracing purposes. There was a sanitizing station available. Failure to meet requirements resulted in no entrance. In groups of 10 people-viewers entered, viewed and exited. There was no sitting in the sanctuary. The family was requesting no personal photos/videos be taken during the public’s direct view at this solemn time. On Saturday, January 2, 2021, the private Celebration of Life service for Rev. Dr. E.B. Burroughs began at 11 a.m. with a virtual link for viewing through Cherry Grove’s website (teamcherrygrove.org). The Reverend Jacqueline B. Blue, Eulogist, and Pastor M. DeWayne Mack, Officiant. Due to COVID-19 limitations, only 50 people could attend — extended by the Burroughs family. No exceptions were made. The Interment immediately followed in the Cherry Grove Church Cemetery. Masks were required. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a monetary donation to the Rev. Dr. E. B. Burroughs Memorial Scholarship Endowment at Morris College, 100 West College Street, Sumter, SC 29150. The family was not receiving visitors at this time. Arrangements are entrusted to Jordan Funeral Home Inc. of Darlington.
