Man held in Hartsville man’s slaying

A Hartsville man has been charged in the slaying of another Hartsville man last week.

Darlington County Sheriff Tony Chavis said investigators have charged Freddy Ray Harris III, 36, of Hartsville with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and grand larceny greater than $2,000 but less than $10,000.

Kurt Russell Scholl of Hartsville was shot multiple times on Racetrack Road outside of Hartsville. Authorities located the suspect near Tabernacle Church Road in Chesterfield County.

Investigators also allege Harris stole a vehicle earlier in the day last Monday.

Harris was hospitalized after his capture because of an aggravated injury that occurred prior to the incident.

Harris was in custody at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center.
