Local officials celebrate cleaner water

Officials including state Sen. Gerald Malloy (at podium) and state Rep. Robert Williams met Jan. 6 at the Darlington County Water and Sewer Authority’s administrative offices to celebrate the prospect of clean drinking water for residents living near Society Hill. The citizens’ current water supply is furnished by wells that yield a high iron content. The water is safe to drink, but is not clear to look at and discolors light-colored clothing when washed. The community began the quest for clean drinking water 15 years ago. A breakthrough came when Malloy was able to secure $300,000 from the state General Appropriations Bill. Total project cost is $499,858, with the Water and Sewer Authority funding $199,858. The project is to be completed in February.
