Five from Florence County held in man’s shooting

The Darlington Police Department has released the names of five suspects – all from Florence County – who have been charged with attempted murder after a man was shot and wounded on Edwards Avenue April 23. Police Chief Kelvin Washington said the victim “is recovering.” He declined to discuss what led to the shooting or whether it was gang-related, saying only that the case remained under investigation. Washington listed the five suspects as: — Demani Maliq Johnson, 17, of 407 Church St., Florence. He is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine. (A booking photo of Johnson could not be found on county jail records.) — Javiaeon Washington, 18, of 511 Jarrot St., Florence. He is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine. (Jail records spell Washington’s first name as “J-Viaeon.”) — Jamal Malik Martin, 18, of 518 Medford Lane, Apt. B, Florence. He is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine. — Quitin Jaa’mal Alexander Benbow, 23, of 518 Clyde St., Florence. He is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine. — Marquez Lamonte Williams, 21, of 2227 McKeen Lane, Effingham. He is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine.
