Emma Carol Gandy Hunsucker

Emma Carol Gandy Hunsucker joined her friends and family in heaven on August 26, 2021 at the age of 91. Born in Society Hill, SC, Emma Carol was the last surviving of nine siblings. Emma and her husband, H. Lawson Hunsucker who predeceased her, raised a family and enjoyed rewarding careers in Hartsville, Columbia, Society Hill and Darlington, SC. Emma enjoyed retiring to her daughter’s home in Weaverville, NC in 2004 until she became a resident of WNC Baptist Retirement Home. Wherever Emma Carol went she reached out to others and joined them in singing, playing piano by ear, helping and mentoring both adults and children at Weaverville First Baptist Church in the Senior Meal Site, the Kids For Christ program, and with her Sunday school class. While living in Columbia, SC, Carol taught first grade at Arden and Denny Terrace Elementary Schools in Richland County. She finished her career at Rosenwald Elementary in Darlington County, SC. She was nominated for Teacher of the Year in both districts. While living in Darlington, SC her interests included leading Girls In Action (GAs) at Welch Neck Baptist Church in Society Hill. She also taught adult literacy for Darlington County. She is survived by her daughter, Sylvia Hunsucker Easterling (Harry “Skip”) of Weaverville, NC and by her son, Hugh Lawson Hunsucker, Jr. of Salina, Kansas. She is also survived by four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Memorial celebrations of Emma Carol’s life are planned at Weaverville First Baptist Church and at Welch Neck Baptist Church in Society Hill, SC. Emma Hunsucker will be buried at Welch Neck Baptist cemetery next to her husband, Lawson. Memorial gifts may be sent to Weaverville First Baptist Church, Welch Neck Baptist Church in Society Hill, SC, SECU Center for MemoryCare of Asheville, NC.
