Darlington County Crime Watch Network awarded Community Partnership Grant

The Darlington County Crime Watch Network was recently awarded a 2018 Community Partnership Grant from the South Carolina Tobacco-Free Collaborative to address the impact of tobacco use in local communities.

The South Carolina Tobacco-Free Collaborative provides Community Partnership Grants to coalitions and organizations to develop programs and activities designed to address the toll of tobacco use in their communities. This competitive funding opportunity provides awards to local community-based organizations that support the mission of the South Carolina Tobacco-Free Collaborative and are designed to invest in projects that address goals of the state plan, Ending the Epidemic: Plan for a Tobacco-Free South Carolina, 2015-2020.

“We look forward to training our network members so that they may provide secondhand smoke education and promote tobacco-free policy adoption in not only Darlington County, but some areas in Florence County as well,” said Patricia Ray, Project Coordinator at the W. Glen Campbell Detention Center. “Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death in both the United States and South Carolina and we are excited to use these funds to make our service area a safer place to live for all members of our community.”

Activities will include assessing existing policies in workplace settings, educating community residents and various organizations on the dangers of secondhand smoke exposure and the benefit of tobacco-free settings, and providing model policy samples to local city and county municipalities.

According to the 2014-2015 SC Adult Tobacco Survey, 19 percent of SC adults currently smoke cigarettes. Additionally, 22 percent of SC adults report being exposed to secondhand smoke in the workplace, according to SC DHEC.
