Couple to fight Society Hill livestock ruling

Dwayne and Joanne Duke say they will fight an ordinance recently passed by Society Hill Town Council limiting livestock in town limits. Under the new law, residents can have no more than six chickens and two horses at their property in town limits. The law, which won’t take effect until December, would force the Dukes to remove most of their estimated 31 animals on their property. Their animals include chickens, goats, cows, horses, hens, a duck and a rooster. The Dukes have argued the town is targeting them for political reasons, while Mayor Tommy Bradshaw has argued that the town cannot let residents maintain full-scale farms in town limits. At one point, residents feared that the Dukes planned a “zoo” on their land.
