County schools report few COVID cases

COVID-19 cases in Darlington County public schools may be more of a problem for faculty and staff members than for students, according to numbers from the state Department of Health and Environmental Control. DHEC data last week indicated that, with one exception, all schools in the Darlington County School District had fewer than five COVID cases among either students or faculty. Hartsville High School was the exception, reporting 10 cases among students. The numbers provided by DHEC don’t show exact numbers of cases unless they exceed five; they simply say fewer than five. But based on that measure, it appears that there have been more cases among faculty than students. Seven schools reported zero cases among students and fewer than five among faculty. Only one reported cases among students but none among faculty. Here’s a look at the breakdown available on DHEC’s website last week: Bay Road Elementary School, Hartsville: Fewer than five cases among students, fewer than five among faculty. Brockington Elementary, Darlington: Zero among students, fewer than five among faculty. Cain Elementary, Darlington: Zero among students, fewer than five among faculty. Carolina Elementary, Hartsville: Fewer than five among students, fewer than five among faculty. Darlington County Institute of Technology, Darlington: Zero students, fewer than five faculty. Darlington High: Fewer than five among students, fewer than five among faculty. Darlington Middle: Fewer than five among students, fewer than five among faculty. Hartsville High: 10 cases among students, fewer than five among faculty. Hartsville Middle: Fewer than five among students, fewer than five among faculty. Lamar High: Fewer than five among students, zero among faculty. Lamar-Spaulding Elementary: No cases reported. Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology: Zero cases among students, fewer than five among faculty. North Hartsville Elementary: Fewer than five among students, fewer than five among faculty. Pate Elementary, Darlington: No cases reported. Rosenwald Elementary/Middle, Society Hill: Zero cases among students, fewer than five among faculty. Southside Early Childhood Center, Hartsville: Zero cases among students, fewer than five among faculty. Spaulding Middle, Lamar: Fewer than five among students, fewer than five among faculty. St. John’s Elementary, Darlington: Zero cases among students, fewer than five among faculty. Thornwell School for the Arts, Hartsville: Fewer than five among students, fewer than five among faculty.
