County OKs buying two new fire trucks at $500,000 each

Darlington County Council moved quickly last week to approve the purchase of two “almost brand-new” fire trucks for a total price of $1 million, officials said. During a special meeting July 21, council agreed to buy the Darlington County Fire District two Pierce Sabers at $500,000 each, said Fire District Chief Ricky Flowers. The county had a 48-hour deadline to decide whether to make the deal, he said. “These trucks were a hot commodity,” Flowers said. “It’s a big deal for us. … They’re almost brand-new.” Flowers said other cities and counties were also interested in buying the trucks, hence the deadline for the county to decide. The money for new trucks had already been planned, he said. One truck will go to the Lake Swamp fire station; the other will go to the Pine Ridge station, Flowers said. He said the trucks should arrive here from their manufacturer in Bradenton, Fla., in about 90 days, which he called a very fast delivery time for vehicles like these. — Bobby Bryant
