Council begins interviews with city manager candidates

Darlington City Council has begun meeting privately with candidates for city manager. The city got 67 applications to replace former city manager Howard Garland, who held the post for 11 years, but council voted not to renew his contract. Council met in executive session May 25 and May 27 at City Hall to interview candidates for the job. It wasn’t clear how far council has narrowed its choices. Council had asked the Municipal Association of South Carolina to help narrow the field of candidates, but council members were not necessarily obligated to follow the association’s recommendations. City spokeswoman Lisa Chalian-Rock said she could not provide details of council’s meetings with candidates or how many candidates were to be interviewed last week. — Bobby Bryant
