Why is it called “Society Hill”?
First located down near the banks of the Pee Dee River around 1736, the settlement became known as Long Bluff by the 1750s.
St. David’s has long burning, intellectual history
A meeting was held on December 13, 1777, in the Welsh Neck Baptist Church, “to promote learning”, according to the private journal of Rev. Evan Pugh, an early pastor of Welsh Neck Baptist Church.
Society Hill Library is 200 years old
When the St. David’s Society was organized in 1777, it was established for the purpose of founding a public school for “educating youths in the Latin and Greek languages, mathematics and other useful branches of learning,” according to Gregg’s History of the Old Cheraws.
