Members of the American Legion Post #13 welcomed the South Carolina State Commander Bob Scherer and his wife Sherri, Roberta Poulos, 4th Vice Commander, and Ron Price, District 15 Commander to their September meeting.
Scherer congratulated the Post on increasing their membership, and urged them to continue their efforts. “Visibility is key to helping fellow veterans,” he said. “My goal is for each of the 168 Posts to increase their membership this year.”
The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.

Roberta Poulos shared that many young veterans ask, “What does the American Legion do for me?” she said. “I can tell them that we do plenty. We led the investigation on the V.A. Hospital issues, and we are pushing daily to insure that veterans get the help they need and deserve.”
Poulos also shared that there are many discounts available to members of the American Legion, such as 15% off home improvements by Sears.
“People are often surprised by what their membership does for them,” said Poulos. “We urge everyone to connect with their local American Legion to see our programs and how we can help.”
The Post #13 members will continue their drive this winter to provide much needed sleeping bags for children in the Darlington County School District. “We have a great number of children in our county that live below the poverty level, and many do not have adequate heating in their homes nor sleeping arrangements,” said Post #13 Commander Grady Weaver. “We will strive to help as many families as we can this winter by providing warm sleeping bags as we have done the past several years.”
