Barney W. Odom
On Tuesday, July 27, 2022 we lost a legend named Barney W. Odom, Sr. Mr. Odom was born in Darlington On March 20, 1941. He was raised in the Dovesville Community by his parents, the late Harley W. and Louvinia Stanley Odom.
Barney believed in working hard and showing up on time, values he carried with him as he worked for SONOCO for 36 years. In the late 1980’s, he and his tree climbing dog, “Flatnose” appeared on the Johnny Carson show and was later invited to Japan and to the Smothers Brothers Show.
He was such a hit, that he was also invited out for a second interview with Johnny Carson. Barney refused a contract with a major beer company because he felt that Flatnose’s talent was for the children to enjoy.
Barney always enjoyed being outdoors, using herring or flounder nets and catching spots. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his children: Randy (Angela) Odom, Wayne Odom, David (Trini) Odom, Barney (Dawn) Odom; all of Darlington, grandchildren: Chelsea Odom, Brooke (Brock) Quick, Jordan (Jesse) Gaymon, Logan Odom; great-grandchild, Collins Quick, siblings: Francis McNeese of MS, Delores (Robert) Altman of Camden.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances “Frankie” White Odom, a grand-son, Trampus Odom and a sister, Dorothy Howle.
A funeral service was held at 10:00 am Saturday, July 30th at Flat Creek Free Will Baptist Church, with burial following in Black Creek Cemetery. The family received friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Friday evening at Belk Funeral Home and other times at 3428 Oakland Dr, Darlington. A guestbook is available online at www.belkfuneralhome.com
