Deacon Greashon “Gret” Harkless

Funeral services for Deacon Greashon “Gret” Harkless of Darlington was held 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 21, 2015 at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Timmonsville.

Deacon Harkless, son of the late John and Azalee Davis Harkless, was born August 30, 1936. He attended school in Florence County, and was employed by Perfection America as a forklift driver for 20 years, then later at Santee Electric. At an early age, he joined Mount Carmel Baptist Church where he served as a member of many organizations.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories: his devoted wife of fifty-six years, Naomi Epps Harkless; his four children: Calvin (Annette) Harkless, Nova Harkless, Gresham (Cathy) Harkless, and Rosalind Harkless; five grandchildren: Aliah Harrison, Kendall (Jay) Davis, Gresham Harkless, Jr., Calvin Harkless II, and Savion Harkless; three great grandchildren: Jazmine, Sydney, and Kavon Raggs; three sisters: Flora Lee Free, Ms. Anna Mae Harkless, and Mrs. Rosa Lee Bacote ; one brother-in-law, James Epps; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; and many friends.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 308 Washington Street, Darlington.

Barbara Truett

Barbara Gunter Truett, 66, died Friday December 18, 2015 in McLeod Hospice House after an illness. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 21 at Wayside Baptist Church in Bishopville. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home. The family received friends from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Truett was born in Marlboro County, the daughter of Louise Brown Gunter Mouzon and the late Clarence Gunter. She was a homemaker, the “neighborhood nanny and taxi driver,” and a member of Wayside Baptist Church. She loved her family and her church family.

Mrs. Truett is survived by her mother, Louise B. Gunter Mouzon; her husband, Leonard Truett, of Darlington; sons: Robert “Len” (Brandi Roselli) Gainey, William (Cami) Truett, Robbie (Debra) Truett, and Tony Truett, all of Darlington; daughters: Lisa (Woody) Barber, Tonya Williamson, Teresa (Tim) Odom Briskie, and Bonnie (Steve) Culpepper, all of Darlington; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Charity Gainey; brother, Darrell (Hope) Gunter of Thompson, GA; and sister, Linda Brownly of Sumter.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by sons: Ronnie Gainey, Julius Monroe Gainey III, and Frankie Nobles; brother, Clarence Gunter, Jr.; and step-father, Dargan Mouzon.

Cynthia Jean Jordan

Cynthia Jean Jordan, 49, of Darlington died on Sunday, December 13, 2015 at the McLeod Hospice House in Florence.

A celebration of her life was held on Friday, December 18, 2015 at Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home in Darlington from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Cynthia was born in Florence. She was the daughter of the late Jerry Hancock and Janice Powers Hancock. Cynthia worked at Shoney’s in Florence, and Hartsville. She loved spending time with her family and friends, and a drinking a cup of coffee with her poodle, Lilly.

She is survived by sons Ralph Jordan and wife, Erin of Hartsville, and Charlie Jordan of Darlington; daughter Amber Jordan Rhueark and husband, Matt of Darlington; sisters Lisa Dutton and husband, Allen, and Jackie Hancock; and grandchildren Autumn and Summer Rhueark.

Major Edwin M. Slaughter, Jr., USAF (Ret.)

Major Edwin M. Slaughter, Jr., husband of Martha Watford Slaughter, age 93, passed away Monday, December 14, 2015. Funeral service was held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 17th at Lamar First Baptist Church, followed by graveside service with military honors at Florence National Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Born in Cleveland, OH on February 1, 1922, Edwin was the son of the late Edwin M. Slaughter, Sr., and the late Florence Black Slaughter. He served in the U.S. Air Force in the 6th Air Force Division in WWII, where he flew 80 missions, and the 5th Air Force Division during the Korean War, before retiring after 21 years of service from 1942-1963. Edwin then worked for the State of S.C. Employment Security Commission. He was a member of the Air Force Association, and the Retired Officers Association. Edwin served as a former Deacon for Lamar First Baptist Church, was a member of the Darlington Country Club, and a member of Evelyn Scarborough Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Martha Watford Slaughter of Darlington, are his son, Edwin M. Slaughter III of Seattle, WA; his step-son, Kenneth Windham of Belmont, N.C.; his grandchildren, Jessica Slaughter (Todd) Ross, Summer Slaughter (Zach) Winslow, Gina (Bryan) Zeros, Loni (Josh) Frey, Rose (Orlando) Brinseno, Michael (Catherine) Windham, Crystal Windham, Ryan Windham, Joshua Windham, and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert L. Slaughter; and two step-sons, Gene Windham, and Linwood Windham.

The family received friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 16th at Belk Funeral Home Lamar Chapel.

Gary Wayne Gainey, Jr.

Gary Wayne Gainey, Jr., age 28, of Dovesville, S.C., passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at his residence due to medical conditions. A memorial service was held 5:00 p.m. Friday, December 18th at Flat Creek Pentecostal Church, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Born October 11, 1987, Gary is the son of the late Gary Wayne Gainey, Sr., and the late Sandra D. Pye Gainey. He worked as a mechanic, and attended Flat Creek Pentecostal Church. He enjoyed his family and playing with his nephews.

Surviving are his sister, Dacia Gainey of Darlington; two very special nephews that was his world, J. Greshan Cameron and Gary Ryan Cameron; two very special cousins, Jonathan Wilson and Sheila Ham, and his girlfriend, Gretchen Carraway.

Preceded in death, in addition to his parents, are his nephew, Dustin Wayne Cameron; his grandfather, Monroe Gainey; and two grandmothers, Kathleen Gainey and Eunice Boseman Beasley.

Perry F. Andrews

Perry Frank Andrews, husband of Mary Lee H. Andrews, age 85, passed away Monday, December 14, 2015. Graveside service will be held 2:00pm Wednesday, December 16th at Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Born September 28, 1930, Perry is the son of the late Frank Andrews, and the late Lillie Odom Andrews. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and also worked as a farmer and with the U.S. Postal Service. Perry was an avid USC fan.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 64 years, Mary Lee H. Andrews of Darlington are his many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Jeffrey B. Andrews, and his siblings, Bascom Andrews, Elodie Jeffords, Clarice Jones, Cloey Truette, Morris Andrews, and Miriam Newsome.

Mary Lee would like to express special appreciation to all of Perry’s caregivers during his illness — with very heartfelt thanks to Stephen Andrews, Bennie Hutchinson and Dale Andrews.
