The Next Generation: ‘I want to make a difference in the world’

Samantha Dorriety, a sophomore at Hartsville High School is very optimistic about what life has to offer. When she came to Hartsville High School, she saw a whole new world of opportunities. Speaking with her guidance counselor opened her eyes to all the job opportunities.

Samantha also attends the Darlington County Institute of Technology. As she begins the long walk down the hall, she has plenty of female company. Once she makes that left at the end of the hall, she is the sole female in her Agricultural Mechanics class. It is clear when you meet Samantha that she is not deterred by the lack of other females in her class.

“My career could be a man’s job or a woman’s, but it is currently rare to see women in the agricultural field. I want to prove that women can do the same types of jobs that men can do. I want to make a difference in the world for men and women everywhere.”

Mr. Bert Beasley is the Agricultural Mechanics and Environmental Resources teacher and according to Mr. Beasley, “Samantha has shown great self-confidence and determination in being the only female in her class. She is hard-working and I have no doubt that she will be successful whatever career path she chooses.”

Her career choice means a lot to her because of what she believes in and the difference she wants to make in the world.

“There are so many things I want to change in this world but I know that I can’t do it alone and the decisions that I make can change the way other girls are influenced.” Samantha has expressed that in addition to pursuing a nontraditional career, she wants to influence other girls to “not care what guys say and believe in themselves to do what they dream of doing.”

Samantha’s passion shines through as she shares her feelings about how stressful it is to be a girl because “girls get judged so much no matter how or what they do. I want to break that, I don’t want girls to get judged for what they do and I don’t want girls being afraid to be themselves because someone is always judging them. I want to make an impact on everyone and change the way girls are viewed.”

She knew since she was little that she wanted to either work with or take care of animals. Samantha thought it was really cool when a representative from the Department of Natural Resources spoke to her class about hunting licenses and the dangers of hunting without using the right precautions. Hunting can be very dangerous and without the right safety, people can be injured or killed. Samantha says, “I love to help animals and I also love to help people when they need it so I want to work for the Department of Natural Resources.”
