First Grade students at St. John’s Elementary School in Darlington celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday with a costumed picnic in the SJE halls last week. Little pilgrim settlers and their Native American friends sat down and broke bread together – cornbread muffins, that is – and enjoyed a lunch of chicken, potatoes, and juice drinks.

After the meal, kids reviewed their lessons about the history of Thanksgiving with principal Dr. Karen Kinloch and tested their knowledge of the Mayflower’s voyage and the pilgrims’ first bountiful feast with Native Americans through a pop quiz given by first grade teachers Virginia Sokol and Jessie Addison.

Addison says this Thanksgiving observation has been a St. John’s tradition for over 20 years, and the teachers and staff felt it was important to keep it going (especially with the recent passing of beloved SJE principal Jean Taylor) and to give the community a glimpse of this very special day for the St. John’s Elementary family.
