Republican candidate Mike Reichenbach won the GOP nomination Jan. 25 to represent S.C. Senate District 31, which includes about 4,500 Darlington County residents.
The seat, almost entirely based in Florence County, was left open after the death of veteran Sen. Hugh Leatherman.
Unofficial returns say Reichenbach defeated his primary opponent, state Rep. Jay Jordan, 52.9 percent to 47 percent. Reichenbach got 5,577 votes to Jordan’s 4,951. Estimated voter-turnout rate was a low 14 percent.
The general election is set for March 29. Reichenbach will face Democratic candidate Suzanne La Rochelle.
An estimated 4,500 Darlington County residents live in District 31. There are only two voting precincts in the county that can cast ballots in this Senate race.
